Chronic Kidney Disease
Chronic Kidney Disease
Chronic Kidney Disease, abbreviated as CKD, is a condition that affects the kidneys and is characterised by the gradual loss of kidney function over time. CKD typically develops slowly and may go unnoticed in its early stages, emphasising the importance of regular kidney function monitoring. In the UK, there are an estimated 7.19 million people living with chronic kidney disease, more than 10% of the entire population, and numbers are still increasing rapidly1.
CKD is often categorised into stages based on the severity of kidney damage, with stage 1 being the mildest and stage 5 representing the most advanced form of the disease, also referred to as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Approximately 3.25 million of these people are living with CKD stages 3-51.
Risk factors for CKD in the UK can be diverse, including high blood pressure, diabetes, and a genetic predisposition to kidney issues. As CKD advances, it impairs the kidneys' ability to filter waste and excess fluids from the blood, leading to complications such as high blood pressure, anaemia, bone problems, and fluid retention in the body. CKD, like diabetes, can result in long-term medical implications particularly relevant to the Cardio-Renal-Metabolic system such as heart disease, stroke, and end-stage kidney disease.
